One thought stayed with us as the 2026 editorial calendar came together. Transformation may be the moment we notice most, but it is never the whole story. Every meaningful change eventually reaches the next chapter: How do we live as the person we’ve become?

That question became the foundation for this year’s theme, INHABITANCE.

Throughout the coming year, you’ll notice each issue builds upon the last. Winter considers the foundations that keep us steady. Spring turns our attention towards practice and discipline. Summer asks us to stretch beyond what feels comfortable, while autumn reflects on what we have to offer as a result of that growth. Together, they move us from reflection into practice, from private cultivation to meaningful contribution.

As we planned our content for this year, another realization emerged. Transformations are often celebrated because they’re easy to recognize. The work underneath it all rarely is. There is little applause for practice and consistency, for the promises we kept despite the uncertainties. Yet those decisions are often the ones that shift habits into lasting change.

Of course, growth is rarely achieved alone. Every article, poem, essay, interview, and photograph represents someone’s lived perspective. That diversity of experience has always been the heart of Arbor of the Vine. It is why we continue welcoming new contributors alongside familiar voices, and why the conversations that begin here are never meant to end in the margins.

We’re already halfway through 2026. With the approaching summer solstice, our theme for June is Ripening: Recognizing Early Personal Achievements.

My husband recently graduated with his master's degree. Around the same time, several friends and family members have also been honoring their graduates. Some are just beginning a trade, while others are reaching goals in established careers. My father-in-law recently retired after more than twenty years of public service, and one of my dearest friends and her husband have achieved FIRE, reaching financial independence and retiring earlier than they once imagined possible.

So, what do I mean by early?

It’s not a fixed timeline, an expectation of speed, or even a comparison. In my experience, it’s about noticing what often goes unrecognized: the effort required to continue moving forward.

With all the celebrations around me this month, I am reminded that failure is a teacher and that perseverance is essential to success. It’s more than a saying; it’s a principle to live by.

Our achievements don’t happen overnight.

Success seems to ripen gradually through persistence, patience, and time. My husband’s degree represents years of coursework, deadlines, and the humility to keep learning without needing to be perfect. My father-in-law’s retirement reflects a life of service, much of it unseen by anyone beyond those he worked beside each day. My friend’s financial independence was built through years of intentional choices, each one bringing her closer to the freedom she now enjoys.

I have spent considerable time reflecting on what I view success in life.

Much of my personal growth has centered on the hope that I might answer one question without regret: How have you loved?

Remember that wherever you find yourself in life, there is value in recognizing how far you’ve come. The milestones may be large or small, visible or unseen. They are no less worthy of acknowledgement. So too are the people who encouraged you along the way, and even those who challenged you, for they are often a sign of what you need not carry.

Life rarely goes according to plan or the timelines we imagined.

I’ve found a new vocation after retiring in 2021. Some people complete a degree in their twenties; others don’t cross the stage until decades later. My friend and her husband dedicated years to early financial freedom and are now traveling the world. These are just a few reminders that success unfolds differently for each of us. Appreciating your own journey does not require measuring it against someone else’s.

None of this is easy. Some of the most meaningful people, circumstances, and seasons in my life have been shaped by the unexpected - after I stopped insisting that there was only one path forward. Yet with practice comes a growing sense of freedom, knowing that the fruits of your labor are already ripening.

You know that feeling after you’ve been away for a while, when you sit down with someone who really knows you, and then realize you don’t have a simple answer to: “How was it?”

That’s me.

Sure, I could tell you where we went. I could show you over a thousand photos (literally). I could list everything we saw across Hong Kong, Macau, Taipei, and Okinawa, but it still wouldn’t quite convey what happened.

What I can say is that I’m finally starting to feel like myself again.

What allows a soul to fly when their heart feels six feet under?

Somewhere along the way, that grief from last season released some of its grip.

At the beginning of the trip, I was still carrying everything with me. You know how it is when you’re holding something heavy, and you’ve gotten so used to it that it doesn’t occur to you to set it down—even for a moment? I didn’t expect a trip to make me forget the weight of what I was carrying. I was just trying to show up and keep up.

We arrived in Hong Kong as the Lunar New Year was unfolding. The entire city felt alive in a way that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it. There’s movement everywhere, people gathering, celebrating, preparing, reconnecting. As a tourist, one might question if it’s performative or staged. Not surprisingly, it’s rich in heritage and still embedded in the traditions of today. There are no outsiders here. You get pulled in simply by being there, with red packets for good fortune being distributed as if limitless.

Letting go...

I remember walking through the streets that first evening and realizing I was energetic. Listening, responding, engaged. It sounds mundane, though it was a polarizing shift from months of feeling withdrawn, fragile, and abandoned. It felt like I was letting go of those oppressive lies and embracing the liberating truth about the circle of life.

I think I was holding onto something, anything, to fill my heart after it had been utterly gutted. Perhaps I was more afraid of the void, as pain remained an old, familiar confidant of mine. To my surprise, I wasn’t empty at all. Serendipitous moments kept embracing me, taking me by complete surprise.

The light is coming.

On my EVA flight, the sunlit sky and buoyant clouds outside my window brought me to heights that looked among the heavens. I couldn’t hold back the silent, steady stream of tears. One of the flight attendants noticed, and instead of turning a polite blind eye, within moments, she was at my side with a pack of tissues and asked if I needed anything. I couldn’t speak, as I was overcome. So, I showed her the memorial charm on my phone lanyard that my dear girlfriends had just gifted me on this trip, along with the screensaver of the most precious love I had ever known, and allowed them to speak for me. Ms. Solphin told me she understood and asked if it was okay to give me a hug. I eagerly nodded and felt a sense of grounding as my sorrow receded. I still have her card because that was a core memory moment.

It wasn’t the only moment like that.

On my last day at the St. Regis in Macau, grief set a place at my table uninvited. I thought I had been discreet and composed myself well enough, but my servers (Asmita, Kaye, and Cindy, whom I had gotten to know that week) stopped by at the right moment. A mimosa was presented on a beautiful platter with flower sprinkles, dried fruit, and a scripted message handwritten in chocolate. As if the surprise tea and biscuits sent to my room earlier that week weren’t enough, the butler had arranged a poolside cabana with a view of the “mini-Las Vegas” strip, and the concierge (I wish I knew them all by name) rescued my guests of honor and me with city transfers. No explanation required, no extra fees, no follow-up. Just sincere acts of care that landed exactly when I needed them.

Temples were vibrant and alive.

Incense thickened the air, amulets brightened every surface, and extended families moved together, making offerings and lingering in fellowship while children set off the unmistakable “CRACK!” of firecrackers. Watching this, I realized people aren’t meant to be alone in shadow. Here, honoring the past and participating in the present existed seamlessly. There’s space for both at the same time.

If Hong Kong, Macau, and Taipei were vivacious, then I’d have to describe Okinawa as an Oasis.

Okinawa was a place that settled into you, and you could feel it gently asking permission. In March, the air out on our private whale watching tour was already warm, the mangrove coastlines appeared to be evergreen, and the slower “island time” pace grounded me after the energy of the Lunar New Year.

The Japanese seem to evoke life into each experience. At the Urashima Dinner Theater, Ryukyuan dancers performed with precision and unbridled joy, generously sharing their culture and art form. A fifteen-course meal was prepared to accommodate our food intolerances, which made me feel invited into a home rather than a performance.

The Murasaki Mura lantern festival renovated streets were once threatened by demolition. This former movie set has been restored and still glows softly where romantics may hold hands along its pathways, families might admire the architecture, and children could play in the courtyards. Experiencing life preserved and illuminated in this way reminded me that what feels hopeless can be transformed.

While visiting the Japanese Cultural Center, my husband and I participated in a private tea ceremony, flower arranging class, and calligraphy lesson. Guided by skilled artisans, it felt like we committed to a day of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility—not as abstract principles, but as lived practice.

As I prepared Matcha, tasted sweet cakes, and absorbed the rhythm of ritual, I became aware of the care and intention behind each gesture. The instructors (joyful, patient, and deeply present) showed me that these practices are as much about human connection as tradition.

The artisans shared stories of their families, students abroad, and the care that goes into each experience. Their attention to timing, tradition, and personal connection showed me how much my own presence and energy influence a space and those around me, teaching me to show up more fully in life.

That’s what I’m taking into this season.

Now that I’m home, I no longer feel fragile. I have no jet lag. I even cured months of suffering from insomnia while there, finally back to a circadian rhythm even after my vacation has ended. For days after my return, I could still feel the effects of the Thai massages. Something physically shifted in a way that stayed with me. The chronic pain subsided, and for the first time in a long time, I felt relaxed in my body, not clenching because of it.

That mattered more than I expected. Experiences like that have a way of restoring something essential. They remind you that you’re still connected to the world, even when you’ve felt removed from it, while people remind you that you’re seen and your presence matters.

In time, perhaps I won’t measure how I feel or try to define it for others.

Maybe I will maintain my attention in conversations. I hope meals will be an experience rather than something I’m just trying to get through. Rather than wondering when I’ll feel inspired again, I’m excited to wake up energized and capable.

Someone whose presence has remained steady across years, distance, and our changing lifestyles. We have celebrated milestone moments, and now, we’ve both had our share of grief. These transitions have a way of clarifying who is willing to stay in your life.

Egypt is the kind of woman who lifts you, roots for you, and doesn’t disappear when things get heavy or inconvenient. Although we have stepped away from the profession that first brought us together, she remains a model in every sense that matters. Her soul is deeply grounded, her light is richly present, and her love is all too generous.

That conversation brought me back to center stage, and the runway before me now feels less obscure, clearer than the dimness that enclosed me yesterday.

In a period of mourning, it can feel like loss leaves a void.

The weight of grief lingers, and the signs of healing remain elusive. One has shown up faithfully, following every recommendation earnestly, even daring to speak, recalling memories that steal the very air you breathe. Your nervous system begets the pointed question: was this of any use? It is an unnerving interval, not dramatic enough to be called a crisis, not settled enough to be called peace. It’s the long in between, where self-compassion is no longer theoretical but required.

Be a friend to yourself: When I spoke with my friend today, her objective was not to fix me. It was simply to be seen. Show yourself that same capacity by listening inwardly without rearranging your story to suit the comfort of others. Don’t hold a mirror for others to judge your worth. When feelings of grief arise, don’t suppress them. Pull up a chair; lean into what you might glean from your emotions.

The soul, having endured something heavy, has already chosen to shift away from it.

This is where inhabitance begins to matter: not retreating from the world, but a practice of remaining present. Healing, contrary to its reputation, does not announce itself with certainty. We must advance toward it by recalibrating posture, thought, and attention, until one day we are oriented away from the belief that pain is permanent.

Be a friend to yourself: Patience, so often misunderstood as passivity, is active devotion. Don’t doubt this investment when the return is not immediate. Your honesty is evidence that there is movement, even if the destination hasn’t been revealed.

Many who pass through grief discover a difficult truth: strength is exhausting.

In periods led by necessity, protector energy takes the wheel. The parts that make decisions and maintain daily functioning were never meant to carry the whole system indefinitely. You may still move through the motions, but healing without integration of the full self cannot be sustained. Eventually, even the most capable require rest, not because you have failed, but because there can be no endurance without relief.

Be a friend to yourself: Start today by taking a practical step – don’t rush your recovery. Your nervous system can begin to relearn safety when given the dignity of time, a supportive network, and self-compassion.

There are days when getting out of bed can feel like the art of negotiation. Here lies no clever remark about snoozing my alarm or prioritizing daily goals. I deliberate with myself.

My physical body is in pain, my emotions have checked out, plus the path between point A and point B is filled with a mind fog so thick that I can’t see past the next small task. Shower. Sustenance. Answer at least one message. I zone out: how is it two o’clock already? I sit there, unable to summon the ambition. In the next shallow breath, I’m anxious. Staring into the void, I begrudgingly dismiss it because I have no sense of urgency. Why is it only three o’clock? Just let the world carry on without my participation; I’m not sure I mind.

If you are there now, or have been, I want you to take off your shoes. Stand barefoot on solid earth, OPEN YOUR EYES, and claim, “I am still here!”

Even when circumstances uproot us, or we go adrift, don’t close your eyes and ignore the ability to inhabit the space you’re in. You may not know all the right words to say right now. You may not see how to fix things right now. You may not find the answers right now. However, you do have right now.

Pain has a way of shrinking the future until it feels irrelevant. Our beliefs try to take hold as facts in those moments: “This is just how life is. This is all I can manage. Life is challenging.” Maybe you stayed stuck there longer than you needed to, not because you were weak, but perhaps part of you believed survival was enough.

In times like these, what grounds me is not motivation; it’s identity. I realized I could not think my way out of despair, nor did I need to deny what I was feeling. Yet, I could decide who I was willing to be inside it. On days when I could only show up as a sensitive three, I cared for her like she was a precious ten anyway.

Missed opportunities stopped feeling like proof of failure. They became time for pause. Unexpected problems were new information. I learned to give when I had something real to share, and to receive without feeling shame or guilt. The person I valued needed to be self-directed in order to feel like myself again – alive, connected, filled with meaning, alongside the potential for growth and fulfillment.

If you are reading this from the deep, please hear this as care, not instruction. Think of your inner experience as the soil in the garden of life. The lifeline to all those beautiful, healthy blooms began with seeds you planted, which took root before they could prosper.

Writing has a way of cementing things: in realization and in gratitude. I started this publication so that my friends and I could spread the light we wanted to see in the world. As we evolve, it appears to be taking the shape of a time capsule—our collective experience, aspirations, and manifestations.

Today, I’m deviating from our outlined topics to process the recent passing of a relative. The stages of grief are commonly known and all too familiar, yet they hit unexpectedly every time. I’m not sure if I go through them sequenced, orderly, and clearly defined. Still navigating the trauma from my youth, I’m rather convinced I start with acceptance and move in reverse order.

I try so hard to detach and be the voice of reason and stability for those clearly wounded, convincing myself that mortality isn’t something I fear - that no inner demons whisper damning thoughts to drag me into the shameful depths of remorse.

In silence, no one hears me. In darkness, no one sees me. To bare one’s soul is the cry your heart must make before anyone can answer. Stumbling through, I eventually find comfort in arms that embrace me.

Life is too short to be less than the best version of yourself. In the end, the question will be: “How have you loved?”

The assignment asked students to describe a place they had never been—real or imagined—using sensory language to capture setting, atmosphere, and emotion. Chanel’s poem, Alice’s Dream, is brimming with creative imagery.

This exercise was about presence: how to see and feel through words. Chanel used sight and scent to establish tone, then layered sound and movement to draw readers deeper into the dream. Her use of enjambment (letting thought spill from one line to the next) added flow, mirroring the unfolding journey she describes.

Her tearoom, fragrant with jasmine and honey, becomes a portal where sound, scent, and texture create a world just beyond reach. The image of “a bridge of sugar cubes” and “a spoon sailing across the cream” carries both delicacy and sentiments reminiscent of “Wonderland.” Through these lines, she built a complete environment—whimsical, coherent, and alive with curiosity.

She demonstrated command of imagery, improved syntax, and growing confidence in her creative risk-taking. More importantly, rather than try to tame her imagination, she allowed it to inspire her.

Chanel F. is an eighth-grade student studying abroad in Italy. She thrives in multicultural classrooms, developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. An avid reader and aspiring writer, she enjoys exploring history and literature.

Chanel strengthens her communication skills through journaling and creative projects as an Emerging Voices ambassador for transformational activism with the Arbor of the Vine multi-media hub. She has a strong interest in music and art, and regularly contributes to group activities with a collaborative, positive approach.

Living overseas has helped her develop resilience and cultural awareness, which she applies to both academic work and personal goals. Chanel is committed to honesty, compassion, and continuous learning, and she looks forward to pursuing new extracurricular opportunities in high school.

Vogue Strikes a New ‘Pose’-ition

A notable recalibration is underway in prestige publishing. It’s a shift that feels more like a return than a revolution (the truth is out there somewhere).

In September 2025, Vogue announced that under its new editorial architecture, the magazine would publish fewer issues, shrink its volume of quick-turn stories, and reposition print as a ceremonial, curated object.⁸ The goal: not sweeping scale but deeper resonance, a more committed audience rather than a broad but transient one.⁴

Chloe Malle, newly named Vogue’s Head of Editorial Content, has signaled a move to reimagine fashion and culture themes with a sharpened focus that merits careful exploration.³ Rather than chasing pageviews in perpetual motion, she plans to anchor its print editions to cultural moments and treat each as a collectible event.⁷

Relevancy or Revolutionary?

Digital media is not being jettisoned but reweighted. Vogue intends to invest in integrated experiences such as podcasts, interactive content, and commerce extensions, all aligned with the ethos of print.⁴ In effect, Vogue is reframing what constitutes value in prestige media. It is not in the volume of output, but in the worth of each piece, in how compelling each issue feels, and how deep each digital extension digs into reader affinity.

Imagine…E.V.E. settles into her ritual with a weekly greeting from Arbor of the Vine, enticed by one of our featured stories. A seamless transition directs her to a thoughtfully synced podcast episode that offers deeper insights and exclusive interviews. As The Echo Effect concludes, she’s guided to The Arboretum’s Living Library for Women’s Growth with tools to assist with the implementation of new knowledge, techniques, and practices. She then purchases boutique treasures from Lore & Leaf Studio, transforming the experience from mere reading to a sensory journey of discovery. Like a word on the vine, she shares her progress and insights with other E.V.E.s in Poetic Grace’s Subscriber Chat for engagement and connection.

These are intentional collective resources: not only to create a supportive and serene online community with Arbor of the Vine, but also in sense and sensibility. We don’t align with “connection” as a slogan. Voices are movements of activism, and our readers carry into their lives the wisdom, perspectives, and lived experiences of women—scaffoldings that encourage reflection and extend continuity beyond the page.

Heritage & Legacy

That shift is not a surprise to us at AOTV. It echoes a philosophy we’ve held dear and built into our framework more than a year before Vogue made it official. We designed fewer, higher-intent releases that tie editorial to thoughtful commerce and immersive digital touchpoints that sustain—not scatter—reader experience.

This is not eccentricity. For years specialty titles such as Monocle and Wallpaper* have modelled a slower, collectible cadence and pairing print with radio, shops, events, and carefully curated commerce.^{6, 10}

The shift away from mass, click-driven output accelerated in the 2010s as advertising migrated online and audiences fragmented, prompting many mainstream magazines to generate traffic at the loss of texture.^1,9 What Vogue now formalizes has been steadily practiced by niche publishers who long treated print as an artefact, digital as an experience, and both as a shared ecosystem rather than a churn pipeline.⁶

The lesson is not about who moved first. It is about alignment, with cultural institutions of different scales recognizing the same need simultaneously. Readers seek stories they can sit with, not skim past. Listeners want fewer voices shouting at once, and more voices speaking with clarity. Audiences want print that endures, digital that enriches, and commerce that feels like an extension of the story rather than a bait and switch. Instead of overwhelming our followers, we need to demonstrate care with our words and actions that accompany them.

En Vogue

Cultural fatigue and overconsumption are tangible. It seems everywhere you turn, there’s a new headline, new drop, new content, and many audiences feel distanced rather than connected. “Throwaway culture” is not en vogue. The editorial shift is a tacit recognition of a deepening desire for authenticity.

Omnichannel is not a buzzword but our operating principle. In retail and publishing alike, studies support the view that coherence among channels strengthens trust and longevity.⁵ In practice: editorial, commerce, and community inhabit the same ecosystem, offering the reader continuity rather than fracture. We named our model the “omnichannel development plan” because we believed then that cohesion could exist between digital, commerce, and storytelling. Vogue’s pivot affirms that boundary-crossing.

Quality over quantity is a safeguard against algorithmic volatility. Many media houses spent years pursuing maximum clicks, optimizing content purely for reach or trend momentum. That left them tethered to algorithmic changes and traffic swings they could not control. An example of this is when several publishers faced sudden drops in readership following a major algorithm update by a leading social media platform, highlighting the precarious nature of relying heavily on such systems.

Vogue has reclaimed independence: to serve readers directly with work that endures, not simply circulates.

Spirit of Confluence

Vogue’s announcement validates the broader shift in cultural taste, corroborating a position our team at Arbor of the Vine has already adopted. We have not sought to chase trends, but to remain attentive to how excess consumption erodes both creativity and community. Our editorial choices are not to perform connection but to sustain it—through heritage rather than novelty, curation rather than saturation, each release intended to be worthy of record.

To witness Vogue adopt a similar course is reassuring. It tells us the path we have chosen—stewarding design that petitions discernment—is sustainable and necessary. The future of media is in meaningful connections, and that has been our conviction from the start.
