Effort has been applied carefully (without drama), emotions handled with as much honesty as could be summoned, and decisions made in good faith. Yet the future offers very little in the way of reassurance. One continues anyway, mostly out of habit, partly out of integrity, but mainly because stopping would require an explanation that cannot be articulated.

I had a three-hour heart-to-heart today with a friend I once modeled with [let’s call her Egypt]...

Someone whose presence has remained steady across years, distance, and our changing lifestyles. We have celebrated milestone moments, and now, we’ve both had our share of grief. These transitions have a way of clarifying who is willing to stay in your life.

Egypt is the kind of woman who lifts you, roots for you, and doesn’t disappear when things get heavy or inconvenient. Although we have stepped away from the profession that first brought us together, she remains a model in every sense that matters. Her soul is deeply grounded, her light is richly present, and her love is all too generous.

That conversation brought me back to center stage, and the runway before me now feels less obscure, clearer than the dimness that enclosed me yesterday.

In a period of mourning, it can feel like loss leaves a void.

The weight of grief lingers, and the signs of healing remain elusive. One has shown up faithfully, following every recommendation earnestly, even daring to speak, recalling memories that steal the very air you breathe. Your nervous system begets the pointed question: was this of any use? It is an unnerving interval, not dramatic enough to be called a crisis, not settled enough to be called peace. It’s the long in between, where self-compassion is no longer theoretical but required.

Be a friend to yourself: When I spoke with my friend today, her objective was not to fix me. It was simply to be seen. Show yourself that same capacity by listening inwardly without rearranging your story to suit the comfort of others. Don’t hold a mirror for others to judge your worth. When feelings of grief arise, don’t suppress them. Pull up a chair; lean into what you might glean from your emotions.

The soul, having endured something heavy, has already chosen to shift away from it.

This is where inhabitance begins to matter: not retreating from the world, but a practice of remaining present. Healing, contrary to its reputation, does not announce itself with certainty. We must advance toward it by recalibrating posture, thought, and attention, until one day we are oriented away from the belief that pain is permanent.

Be a friend to yourself: Patience, so often misunderstood as passivity, is active devotion. Don’t doubt this investment when the return is not immediate. Your honesty is evidence that there is movement, even if the destination hasn’t been revealed.

Many who pass through grief discover a difficult truth: strength is exhausting.

In periods led by necessity, protector energy takes the wheel. The parts that make decisions and maintain daily functioning were never meant to carry the whole system indefinitely. You may still move through the motions, but healing without integration of the full self cannot be sustained. Eventually, even the most capable require rest, not because you have failed, but because there can be no endurance without relief.

Be a friend to yourself: Start today by taking a practical step – don’t rush your recovery. Your nervous system can begin to relearn safety when given the dignity of time, a supportive network, and self-compassion.

There are days when getting out of bed can feel like the art of negotiation. Here lies no clever remark about snoozing my alarm or prioritizing daily goals. I deliberate with myself.

My physical body is in pain, my emotions have checked out, plus the path between point A and point B is filled with a mind fog so thick that I can’t see past the next small task. Shower. Sustenance. Answer at least one message. I zone out: how is it two o’clock already? I sit there, unable to summon the ambition. In the next shallow breath, I’m anxious. Staring into the void, I begrudgingly dismiss it because I have no sense of urgency. Why is it only three o’clock? Just let the world carry on without my participation; I’m not sure I mind.

If you are there now, or have been, I want you to take off your shoes. Stand barefoot on solid earth, OPEN YOUR EYES, and claim, “I am still here!”

Even when circumstances uproot us, or we go adrift, don’t close your eyes and ignore the ability to inhabit the space you’re in. You may not know all the right words to say right now. You may not see how to fix things right now. You may not find the answers right now. However, you do have right now.

Pain has a way of shrinking the future until it feels irrelevant. Our beliefs try to take hold as facts in those moments: “This is just how life is. This is all I can manage. Life is challenging.” Maybe you stayed stuck there longer than you needed to, not because you were weak, but perhaps part of you believed survival was enough.

In times like these, what grounds me is not motivation; it’s identity. I realized I could not think my way out of despair, nor did I need to deny what I was feeling. Yet, I could decide who I was willing to be inside it. On days when I could only show up as a sensitive three, I cared for her like she was a precious ten anyway.

Missed opportunities stopped feeling like proof of failure. They became time for pause. Unexpected problems were new information. I learned to give when I had something real to share, and to receive without feeling shame or guilt. The person I valued needed to be self-directed in order to feel like myself again – alive, connected, filled with meaning, alongside the potential for growth and fulfillment.

If you are reading this from the deep, please hear this as care, not instruction. Think of your inner experience as the soil in the garden of life. The lifeline to all those beautiful, healthy blooms began with seeds you planted, which took root before they could prosper.

Ours has been touched by tragedy, transition, and transformation. With that simple truth, there will be no formal gathering.

The Thought Leadership Summit was intended to renew our shared purpose, recognize our Ambassadors, and chart the next chapters of Arbor of the Vine. What was to be the first of many award ceremonies may stand as our only one, which carries its own weight. Even so, our gratitude towards you remains steady, sincere, and deserving of an honorary page.

Our team showed a level of devotion far beyond deadlines or tasks.

They nurtured stories and upheld our values during difficulties. Their commitment allowed Arbor of the Vine to stay rooted in care while still reaching toward what’s possible. Our work has always maintained the belief that nurturing the life within us matters as much as caring for the ones around us. At this moment, that means stepping back, listening to what our lives are asking of us, and giving ourselves the space to meet those needs with honesty and intention. As we’ve explored all year, change is inevitable. That transformation can either be forced upon us or we embrace it, growing ever more resilient.

Your willingness to support our vision has meant more than we can express, and your presence continues to echo through us. You have helped this garden bloom with the positivity we wanted to see in the world, and we hold that in deep gratitude.

Writing has a way of cementing things: in realization and in gratitude. I started this publication so that my friends and I could spread the light we wanted to see in the world. As we evolve, it appears to be taking the shape of a time capsule—our collective experience, aspirations, and manifestations.

Today, I’m deviating from our outlined topics to process the recent passing of a relative. The stages of grief are commonly known and all too familiar, yet they hit unexpectedly every time. I’m not sure if I go through them sequenced, orderly, and clearly defined. Still navigating the trauma from my youth, I’m rather convinced I start with acceptance and move in reverse order.

I try so hard to detach and be the voice of reason and stability for those clearly wounded, convincing myself that mortality isn’t something I fear - that no inner demons whisper damning thoughts to drag me into the shameful depths of remorse.

In silence, no one hears me. In darkness, no one sees me. To bare one’s soul is the cry your heart must make before anyone can answer. Stumbling through, I eventually find comfort in arms that embrace me.

Life is too short to be less than the best version of yourself. In the end, the question will be: “How have you loved?”

Lying awake, restless, stirring… my mind wanders aimlessly.

I try to put pen to paper and make some sense of myself as tears threaten to splash the pages. The disturbance is all too familiar. It’s the one thing that always eats at me the most.

I don’t know how it manages to catch me off guard. It’s no stranger to me.
It greets me like an old friend has before: Who you are is not good enough. You can do better. Be better. No one can love you as you are.

Shame!
Although I can feel myself rejecting it this time.
This time, it’s different. I’m tired of apologizing for who I am, nor do I feel like I need to.
I don’t deserve to be cut down. I’ve survived the sores, the bruises, beatings, insults…

I asked for nothing in return except to be left as I am.
To be accepted and loved, or not, just as I am.
Take me or leave me, but don’t try to change me.
And if you stay, then commit. I don’t get the one foot in and one foot out.

I own that I need to set boundaries and manage my expectations.
I need to take inventory of my life.
My world is already so small, and I’ve had to be so selective to stay safe.
They say, “Build a longer table, not a higher fence.”
But I have to make sure there’s a place for me in my own life.
Because there’s nothing I’m not worthy of…and that is brave.

Are you living the life you always wanted, or is fear holding you back?

Do you feel isolated, unloved, or unworthy? OR, did someone never want you to have anything of value? Perhaps they didn’t want you to feel safe and have something reliable and stable to ensure you would never feel like you had any roots or ownership of anything?

Are you so accustomed to the dark of which you claim to be so afraid that it’s truly the LIGHT you fear will show you what you’ve been living without?

No one can erase time, but it can be a gift. It starts now, if you let it. You have the rest of your life to overwrite a past without and exist with love, belonging, safety, and so much more. You’ve got everything to gain; the only life you leave behind is one of regret.

For Chanel, Abor of the Vine’s Emerging Voices Youth Ambassador, that moment arrived in week three of the 2025 Summer Vibes Youth Writers’ Guild, “Illustrate that Scene: Exploring Presence and Atmosphere through Poetry.”

The assignment asked students to describe a place they had never been—real or imagined—using sensory language to capture setting, atmosphere, and emotion. Chanel’s poem, Alice’s Dream, is brimming with creative imagery.

This exercise was about presence: how to see and feel through words. Chanel used sight and scent to establish tone, then layered sound and movement to draw readers deeper into the dream. Her use of enjambment (letting thought spill from one line to the next) added flow, mirroring the unfolding journey she describes.

Her tearoom, fragrant with jasmine and honey, becomes a portal where sound, scent, and texture create a world just beyond reach. The image of “a bridge of sugar cubes” and “a spoon sailing across the cream” carries both delicacy and sentiments reminiscent of “Wonderland.” Through these lines, she built a complete environment—whimsical, coherent, and alive with curiosity.

She demonstrated command of imagery, improved syntax, and growing confidence in her creative risk-taking. More importantly, rather than try to tame her imagination, she allowed it to inspire her.

Alice’s Dream

I once occupied a tearoom’s decorated awning,
Where cups bloom white as spring roses.
Jasmine steam is heavy in the air.
Honey drips like sunlit tales.

Porcelain chimes like gentle bells,
And laughter floats on sugared wind.
A silver teapot whispers maps to me
Pouring directions in curling tones.

I travel on a bridge of sugar cubes
And sail a spoon across the cream.
Each sip reveals a secret road,
A little journey within a dream.
It guides me back to where I began—

Alice’s Dream marked a turning point in Chanel’s creative writing. It’s about discovering the courage to let her voice travel beyond what she’s already known.

Chanel F. is an eighth-grade student studying abroad in Italy. She thrives in multicultural classrooms, developing skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. An avid reader and aspiring writer, she enjoys exploring history and literature.

Chanel strengthens her communication skills through journaling and creative projects as an Emerging Voices ambassador for transformational activism with the Arbor of the Vine multi-media hub. Chloe Malle, newly named Vogue’s Head of Editorial Content, has signaled a move to reimagine fashion and culture themes with a sharpened focus that merits careful exploration.3 Rather than chasing pageviews in perpetual motion, she plans to anchor its print editions to cultural moments and treat each as a collectible event.7

Relevancy or Revolutionary?

Digital media is not being jettisoned but reweighted. Vogue intends to invest in integrated experiences such as podcasts, interactive content, and commerce extensions, all aligned with the ethos of print.4 In effect, Vogue is reframing what constitutes value in prestige media. It is not in the volume of output, but in the worth of each piece, in how compelling each issue feels, and how deep each digital extension digs into reader affinity.

Imagine…E.V.E. settles into her ritual with a weekly greeting from Arbor of the Vine, enticed by one of our featured stories. A seamless transition directs her to a thoughtfully synced podcast episode that offers deeper insights and exclusive interviews. As The Echo Effect concludes, she’s guided to The Arboretum’s Living Library for Women’s Growth with tools to assist with the implementation of new knowledge, techniques, and practices. She then purchases boutique treasures from Lore & Leaf Studio, transforming the experience from mere reading to a sensory journey of discovery. Like a word on the vine, she shares her progress and insights with other E.V.E.s in Poetic Grace’s Subscriber Chat for engagement and connection.

These are intentional collective resources: not only to create a supportive and serene online community with Arbor of the Vine, but also in sense and sensibility. We don’t align with “connection” as a slogan. Voices are movements of activism, and our readers carry into their lives the wisdom, perspectives, and lived experiences of women—scaffoldings that encourage reflection and extend continuity beyond the page.

Heritage & Legacy

That shift is not a surprise to us at AOTV. It echoes a philosophy we’ve held dear and built into our framework more than a year before Vogue made it official. We designed fewer, higher-intent releases that tie editorial to thoughtful commerce and immersive digital touchpoints that sustain—not scatter—reader experience.

This is not eccentricity. For years specialty titles such as Monocle and Wallpaper* have modelled a slower, collectible cadence and pairing print with radio, shops, events, and carefully curated commerce.6, 10

The shift away from mass, click-driven output accelerated in the 2010s as advertising migrated online and audiences fragmented, prompting many mainstream magazines to generate traffic at the loss of texture.1,9 What Vogue now formalizes has been steadily practiced by niche publishers who long treated print as an artefact, digital as an experience, and both as a shared ecosystem rather than a churn pipeline.6

The lesson is not about who moved first. It is about alignment, with cultural institutions of different scales recognizing the same need simultaneously. Readers seek stories they can sit with, not skim past. Listeners want fewer voices shouting at once, and more voices speaking with clarity. Audiences want print that endures, digital that enriches, and commerce that feels like an extension of the story rather than a bait and switch. Instead of overwhelming our followers, we need to demonstrate care with our words and actions that accompany them.

Cultural fatigue and overconsumption are tangible. It seems everywhere you turn, there’s a new headline, new drop, new content, and many audiences feel distanced rather than connected. “Throwaway culture” is not en vogue. The editorial shift is a tacit recognition of a deepening desire for authenticity.

Omnichannel is not a buzzword but our operating principle. In retail and publishing alike, studies support the view that coherence among channels strengthens trust and longevity.5 In practice: editorial, commerce, and community inhabit the same ecosystem, offering the reader continuity rather than fracture. We named our model the “omnichannel development plan” because we believed then that cohesion could exist between digital, commerce, and storytelling. Vogue’s pivot affirms that boundary-crossing.

Quality over quantity is a safeguard against algorithmic volatility. Many media houses spent years pursuing maximum clicks, optimizing content purely for reach or trend momentum. That left them tethered to algorithmic changes and traffic swings they could not control. An example of this is when several publishers faced sudden drops in readership following a major algorithm update by a leading social media platform, highlighting the precarious nature of relying heavily on such systems.

Vogue has reclaimed independence: to serve readers directly with work that endures, not simply circulates.

Spirit of Confluence

Vogue’s announcement validates the broader shift in cultural taste, corroborating a position our team at Arbor of the Vine has already adopted. We have not sought to chase trends, but to remain attentive to how excess consumption erodes both creativity and community. Our editorial choices are not to perform connection but to sustain it—through heritage rather than novelty, curation rather than saturation, each release intended to be worthy of record.

To witness Vogue adopt a similar course is reassuring. It tells us the path we have chosen—stewarding design that petitions discernment—is sustainable and necessary. The future of media is in meaningful connections, and that has been our conviction from the start.

There was a time I believed softness was dangerous. It had no place in white coats, boardrooms, or courtroom custody battles. Now I wear pearls and peace in the same breath, and I have my sisters to thank for that.

Laying Down My Shield: How Sisterhood Helped Me Embrace Feminine Healing

I once wore strength like a tailored coat - sharp, structured, and always buttoned to the neck.

In lecture halls and late-night study sessions...

In the rigid weight of my white coat…

In mothering after separation and moving states alone…I led with logic, resilience, and grit.

If I didn’t do it, who would?

That question followed me like a shadow. Soft mornings and gentle asks felt like luxuries I could not afford. Every choice was a proving ground. Somewhere along the way, we start mistaking exhaustion for empowerment.

That version of me was necessary, but she was never the whole story.

The Armor I Carried

As a minority woman in graduate school, every classroom felt like a looming courtroom where my worth was on trial. I didn’t come from legacy or connections. All I had was grit, and grit became my shield.

Marriage didn’t loosen that armor. Instead of leaning into trust, I wielded independence like a weapon. Disagreements became battlegrounds, victories measured by who was the last to yield. When my first marriage dissolved, I stood again as the knight in shining armor - this time fighting not only for myself but for my little prince. Together we learned the closeness of us against the world. My son was my reason, my cause, my co-defender.

In my career, the pattern continued to deepen. I wore my armor into clinics when patients measured my worth against male doctors, into classrooms where teaching gave me stability but demanded constant authority, into corporate roles along with supervisory titles that required control. Each pivot proved I could stand tall, but none gave me space to sit softly. The world applauded my strength, but no one showed me how to flourish in my femininity. No matter the role, the armor remained.

The Same Battles Resurfacing

By the time I remarried, I thought I had mastered strength. Yet the same battles resurfaced, this time with a different man. Once again, I guarded instead of trusting, fought instead of seeking compromise, and proved instead of resting. My love language was power: I’ll be fine with or without you.

On the outside, I was independent and unshaken. On the inside, I was weary of the war. The near-destruction of my second marriage became a mirror I could no longer avoid. Patterns don’t lie. If the same story repeats with different characters, the lesson is mine to learn.

Curiosity for Another Way

That breaking point stirred a quiet curiosity in me, a yearning to understand the dance between masculine and feminine energy. I no longer wanted to be the lone warrior. I wanted to know what it meant to be queen beside a king.

Until then, the idea of femininity felt abstract, even suspicious. Growing up, softness was often equated with weakness, and I lacked role models who showed otherwise. Society glorified the “boss chick” persona - domineering, unyielding, armored. What I longed for was the yin-yang of life: partnership, balance, ease. Still, I had no roadmap.

I no longer wanted to be the lone warrior.

Sisterhood as Mirror and Muse

I began to grow when I found a circle of women who lived what I had only imagined. Within this sisterhood, femininity is not an abstract concept but a daily practice. Elegance is not for display but for living - woven into the way they speak, support, and carry themselves. Their refinement and grace extend outward, nurturing friendships and communities with the same devotion that strengthens their marriages. Longevity, joy, and partnership are not accidents; they are fruits of intentional love.

In this circle, I have been quietly shaped by gestures of thoughtfulness - postcards arriving from distant places, carrying with them the warmth of being remembered; little tokens from travels abroad that fold me into another woman’s joy, even when miles apart. I’ve been surprised by handwritten notes on ordinary days, or swept into the beauty of holiday tea at a five-star hotel where conversation sparkled brighter than the china. Sunflowers picked side by side in open fields, lunches shared in historic bank vaults, day trips carved out just to sit together - these are the details that root me.

Even while traveling without me, they carry me in mind. On one trip, knowing my love for Bridgerton and my quiet obsession with plants, they created a customized momento just for me and chose a small plant replica as a keepsake. A gesture so simple, yet it memorialized their day while including me in it - a reminder that sisterhood makes space for you even when you’re not in the room.

These women, in their ordinary elegance, show me what I had never known to believe: femininity is not fragile. It is foundational.

Becoming Her

Today, I am still becoming. I still feel the tug of old armor at times; the instinct to protect, to prove, to perform. I also feel pearls at my throat and peace in my chest. I no longer believe exhaustion is empowerment. I no longer mistake guardedness for strength.

I am learning the grace of yielding, the elegance of stillness, the unmatched power of trust.

I am learning that sisterhood is both a mirror and a balm - it shows us who we’ve been and reminds us who we can be.

Reflection for You

Maybe you know the weight of always being the one who holds it together. Maybe you’ve whispered, If I didn’t do it, who would? Or maybe you’ve told yourself, I’ll be fine with or without you, even when what you really wanted was a love worth leaning on.

Get inspired by the story of a young woman who found her voice through Emerging Voices, a peer mentorship program that helps young girls develop emotional literacy, self-expression, and storytelling ethics to become confident, creative, and visionary women.

The Emerging Voices Summer Vibes Pilot Program served as an introduction. The first week was all about the blank page: who am I, and what does it mean to express my truth? That question became an anchor to the unwritten.

In week two, we had turned a wheel of emotions, putting names to the currents some choose to ignore. By the third week, we found confidence, a willingness to pick up the pen when our voice feels unsteady. We worked with sentence starters and character swaps, conveying courage in our expressions.

The final week called for endurance. We set deadlines, marked progress on workflow schedules, and considered what it means to take writing from draft to submission. Students began to see their voices as something they could shape, revise, and prepare for an audience.

In workshop after workshop, we watched hesitation give rise to voices that carried weight. A strength unencumbered by technical polish, but shared with honesty, a willingness to be heard, and written without apology.

It’s that journey you’ll hear in Chanel’s poem—identity, emotion, and process. Her progress over perfection reveals how much ground can be covered in four weeks. She does not disguise the doubt or erase the struggle. Nothing is hidden in the margins; we see the full arc of her growth in lines that expand with confidence.

As a Youth Writers’ Guild Ambassador, Chanel’s poem will be the ceremonial feature at the 2025 Emerging Voices Showcase & Reunion, commencing a new phase for writers as they begin to trust their voice and creative potential.

Leveraging 20 years of experience, Jenny Cline is the Program Director of Emerging Voices. She creates inclusive spaces for young writers, amplifying underrepresented voices through storytelling, workshops, and mentorship.

This is a poem about how mentorship in the Emerging Voices Youth Writers’ Guild helped me become a writer. Through encouragement, constructive feedback, and the practices we used in class, I gained increasing confidence in my voice for creative expression. ~Chanel F.

The Emergence of Voice

I came in with silent hands,
Not sure if my voice had muscle memory to bear a story.

I wrote in margins.
Hesitated over the period.

I feared my truth would be too little
Or too much.

Then someone read my words.
Not just the lines, the meaning.

We practiced sentence starters like open doors:
“I noticed…” “What if…” “This made me feel…”

And suddenly, I wasn’t writing alone
With a guide to lead the way.

I found rhythm in revision.
The Emotion Wheel spun truths I hadn’t named.

The Speak with Confidence chart reminded me that
Fear and courage can sit in the same stanza.

She saw talent I didn’t even know I had.
She said to me, “Your voice is rising.”

And I got credit.
We tracked our process:

Workflow Schedule, check.
Publication Funnel, in progress.

I stopped erasing lines so carefully.
I let them breathe.

In snippets and slides, heroes shifted
And so did I.

From draft to submission, I discovered
This is what real writing is… Messy. Fearless. Intentional.

Now, I don’t write simply because I must.
I write because I love to.

Because reflection became a story
And criticism served as fuel.

Because someone read what I wrote
And said to me, “Continue.”

And I will.
Like the very first poem, I didn’t apologize for.
