I had a three-hour heart-to-heart today with a friend I once modeled with [let’s call her Egypt]...

Someone whose presence has remained steady across years, distance, and our changing lifestyles. We have celebrated milestone moments, and now, we’ve both had our share of grief. These transitions have a way of clarifying who is willing to stay in your life.

Egypt is the kind of woman who lifts you, roots for you, and doesn’t disappear when things get heavy or inconvenient. Although we have stepped away from the profession that first brought us together, she remains a model in every sense that matters. Her soul is deeply grounded, her light is richly present, and her love is all too generous.

That conversation brought me back to center stage, and the runway before me now feels less obscure, clearer than the dimness that enclosed me yesterday.

In a period of mourning, it can feel like loss leaves a void.

The weight of grief lingers, and the signs of healing remain elusive. One has shown up faithfully, following every recommendation earnestly, even daring to speak, recalling memories that steal the very air you breathe. Your nervous system begets the pointed question: was this of any use? It is an unnerving interval, not dramatic enough to be called a crisis, not settled enough to be called peace. It’s the long in between, where self-compassion is no longer theoretical but required.

Be a friend to yourself: When I spoke with my friend today, her objective was not to fix me. It was simply to be seen. Show yourself that same capacity by listening inwardly without rearranging your story to suit the comfort of others. Don’t hold a mirror for others to judge your worth. When feelings of grief arise, don’t suppress them. Pull up a chair; lean into what you might glean from your emotions.

The soul, having endured something heavy, has already chosen to shift away from it.

This is where inhabitance begins to matter: not retreating from the world, but a practice of remaining present. Healing, contrary to its reputation, does not announce itself with certainty. We must advance toward it by recalibrating posture, thought, and attention, until one day we are oriented away from the belief that pain is permanent.

Be a friend to yourself: Patience, so often misunderstood as passivity, is active devotion. Don’t doubt this investment when the return is not immediate. Your honesty is evidence that there is movement, even if the destination hasn’t been revealed.

Many who pass through grief discover a difficult truth: strength is exhausting.

In periods led by necessity, protector energy takes the wheel. The parts that make decisions and maintain daily functioning were never meant to carry the whole system indefinitely. You may still move through the motions, but healing without integration of the full self cannot be sustained. Eventually, even the most capable require rest, not because you have failed, but because there can be no endurance without relief.

Be a friend to yourself: Start today by taking a practical step – don’t rush your recovery. Your nervous system can begin to relearn safety when given the dignity of time, a supportive network, and self-compassion.

There are days when getting out of bed can feel like the art of negotiation. Here lies no clever remark about snoozing my alarm or prioritizing daily goals. I deliberate with myself.

My physical body is in pain, my emotions have checked out, plus the path between point A and point B is filled with a mind fog so thick that I can’t see past the next small task. Shower. Sustenance. Answer at least one message. I zone out: how is it two o’clock already? I sit there, unable to summon the ambition. In the next shallow breath, I’m anxious. Staring into the void, I begrudgingly dismiss it because I have no sense of urgency. Why is it only three o’clock? Just let the world carry on without my participation; I’m not sure I mind.

If you are there now, or have been, I want you to take off your shoes. Stand barefoot on solid earth, OPEN YOUR EYES, and claim, “I am still here!”

Even when circumstances uproot us, or we go adrift, don’t close your eyes and ignore the ability to inhabit the space you’re in. You may not know all the right words to say right now. You may not see how to fix things right now. You may not find the answers right now. However, you do have right now.

Pain has a way of shrinking the future until it feels irrelevant. Our beliefs try to take hold as facts in those moments: “This is just how life is. This is all I can manage. Life is challenging.” Maybe you stayed stuck there longer than you needed to, not because you were weak, but perhaps part of you believed survival was enough.

In times like these, what grounds me is not motivation; it’s identity. I realized I could not think my way out of despair, nor did I need to deny what I was feeling. Yet, I could decide who I was willing to be inside it. On days when I could only show up as a sensitive three, I cared for her like she was a precious ten anyway.

Missed opportunities stopped feeling like proof of failure. They became time for pause. Unexpected problems were new information. I learned to give when I had something real to share, and to receive without feeling shame or guilt. The person I valued needed to be self-directed in order to feel like myself again – alive, connected, filled with meaning, alongside the potential for growth and fulfillment.

If you are reading this from the deep, please hear this as care, not instruction. Think of your inner experience as the soil in the garden of life. The lifeline to all those beautiful, healthy blooms began with seeds you planted, which took root before they could prosper.

Writing has a way of cementing things: in realization and in gratitude. I started this publication so that my friends and I could spread the light we wanted to see in the world. As we evolve, it appears to be taking the shape of a time capsule—our collective experience, aspirations, and manifestations.

Today, I’m deviating from our outlined topics to process the recent passing of a relative. The stages of grief are commonly known and all too familiar, yet they hit unexpectedly every time. I’m not sure if I go through them sequenced, orderly, and clearly defined. Still navigating the trauma from my youth, I’m rather convinced I start with acceptance and move in reverse order.

I try so hard to detach and be the voice of reason and stability for those clearly wounded, convincing myself that mortality isn’t something I fear - that no inner demons whisper damning thoughts to drag me into the shameful depths of remorse.

In silence, no one hears me. In darkness, no one sees me. To bare one’s soul is the cry your heart must make before anyone can answer. Stumbling through, I eventually find comfort in arms that embrace me.

Life is too short to be less than the best version of yourself. In the end, the question will be: “How have you loved?”

There was a time I believed softness was dangerous. It had no place in white coats, boardrooms, or courtroom custody battles. Now I wear pearls and peace in the same breath, and I have my sisters to thank for that.

I once wore strength like a tailored coat - sharp, structured, and always buttoned to the neck.

In lecture halls and late-night study sessions...

In the rigid weight of my white coat…

In mothering after separation and moving states alone…I led with logic, resilience, and grit.

If I didn’t do it, who would?

That question followed me like a shadow. Soft mornings and gentle asks felt like luxuries I could not afford. Every choice was a proving ground. Somewhere along the way, we start mistaking exhaustion for empowerment.

That version of me was necessary, but she was never the whole story.

The Armor I Carried

As a minority woman in graduate school, every classroom felt like a looming courtroom where my worth was on trial. I didn’t come from legacy or connections. All I had was grit, and grit became my shield.

Marriage didn’t loosen that armor. Instead of leaning into trust, I wielded independence like a weapon. Disagreements became battlegrounds, victories measured by who was the last to yield. When my first marriage dissolved, I stood again as the knight in shining armor - this time fighting not only for myself but for my little prince. Together we learned the closeness of us against the world. My son was my reason, my cause, my co-defender.

In my career, the pattern continued to deepen. I wore my armor into clinics when patients measured my worth against male doctors, into classrooms where teaching gave me stability but demanded constant authority, into corporate roles along with supervisory titles that required control. Each pivot proved I could stand tall, but none gave me space to sit softly. The world applauded my strength, but no one showed me how to flourish in my femininity. No matter the role, the armor remained.

The Same Battles Resurfacing

By the time I remarried, I thought I had mastered strength. Yet the same battles resurfaced, this time with a different man. Once again, I guarded instead of trusting, fought instead of seeking compromise, and proved instead of resting. My love language was power: I’ll be fine with or without you.

On the outside, I was independent and unshaken. On the inside, I was weary of the war. The near-destruction of my second marriage became a mirror I could no longer avoid. Patterns don’t lie. If the same story repeats with different characters, the lesson is mine to learn.

Curiosity for Another Way

That breaking point stirred a quiet curiosity in me, a yearning to understand the dance between masculine and feminine energy. I no longer wanted to be the lone warrior. I wanted to know what it meant to be queen beside a king.

Until then, the idea of femininity felt abstract, even suspicious. Growing up, softness was often equated with weakness, and I lacked role models who showed otherwise. Society glorified the “boss chick” persona - domineering, unyielding, armored. What I longed for was the yin-yang of life: partnership, balance, ease. Still, I had no roadmap.

Sisterhood as Mirror and Muse

I began to grow when I found a circle of women who lived what I had only imagined. Within this sisterhood, femininity is not an abstract concept but a daily practice. Elegance is not for display but for living - woven into the way they speak, support, and carry themselves. Their refinement and grace extend outward, nurturing friendships and communities with the same devotion that strengthens their marriages. Longevity, joy, and partnership are not accidents; they are fruits of intentional love.

In this circle, I have been quietly shaped by gestures of thoughtfulness - postcards arriving from distant places, carrying with them the warmth of being remembered; little tokens from travels abroad that fold me into another woman’s joy, even when miles apart. I’ve been surprised by handwritten notes on ordinary days, or swept into the beauty of holiday tea at a five-star hotel where conversation sparkled brighter than the china. Sunflowers picked side by side in open fields, lunches shared in historic bank vaults, day trips carved out just to sit together - these are the details that root me.

Even while traveling without me, they carry me in mind. On one trip, knowing my love for Bridgerton and my quiet obsession with plants, they created a customized momento just for me and chose a small plant replica as a keepsake. A gesture so simple, yet it memorialized their day while including me in it - a reminder that sisterhood makes space for you even when you’re not in the room.

These women, in their ordinary elegance, show me what I had never known to believe: femininity is not fragile. It is foundational.

Becoming Her

Today, I am still becoming. I still feel the tug of old armor at times; the instinct to protect, to prove, to perform. I also feel pearls at my throat and peace in my chest. I no longer believe exhaustion is empowerment. I no longer mistake guardedness for strength.

I am learning the grace of yielding, the elegance of stillness, the unmatched power of trust.

I am learning that sisterhood is both a mirror and a balm - it shows us who we’ve been and reminds us who we can be.

Reflection for You
