Reflecting on my retirement, I realized that my most transformative experiences were shaped by the rhythms of foreign lands. Growing up amidst the sovereign Navajo Nation in northern Arizona, I witnessed a people deeply rooted in tradition and history. Their vibrant culture – rich in language, song, dance, art, and ceremony – stirred within me a desire to explore the world beyond America's borders.

My career took me to various Eastern countries, where I immersed myself in local customs and daily life. During my three-year residence in Okinawa, Japan, I integrated with local culture, learned to navigate daily life, completed two Naha Marathons, and culminated my experience by climbing Mt. Fuji, Japan's tallest mountain. I explored South Korea's pulsing capital of Seoul and stood between North and South Korea at the edge of the Demilitarized Zone, the world's most fortified border. I ventured further to Thailand's golden temples, Indonesia's lush rainforests, and the Middle East's ancient ruins and sacred monuments. Each destination revealed unique facets of human experience: resilience and the pursuit of meaning - a paradigm of culture, ancestry, and shared heritage.

Wandering beyond tourist trails, I delved into local communities, where daily life unfolded with profound simplicity. I saw families sharing meals in Indonesian villages, children inventing games with scraps in Filipino slums, and spirited bartering in Middle Eastern souks. Across cultures, neighbors extended a helping hand. These moments taught me that contentment lies not in material wealth, but in the simple, everyday connections we make with others.

A conversation with a Turkish café owner remains imprinted within my memory. He reflected on the American pursuit of happiness, saying, "You chase it, but it's already within you." His words shifted my focus to the heart of the matter, as I had witnessed the paradox of abundance: the more we accumulate, the emptier we feel.

From living in and visiting 17 countries over the past 21 years, I've discovered that happiness truly lies in presence – in relationships, moments, and memories – not in material possessions. It's the warmth of shared moments, the comfort of togetherness, and the serenity that comes from living with intention. As I returned to the United States, I carried this wisdom with me, grateful for the freedoms and conveniences I once took for granted.

Now, I prioritize contentment in the moment. My experiences illustrated that true wealth lies not in what we own, but in the quality of our relationships and the richness of life's moments. Travel has the power to transform us, to awaken our potential, and to remind us of our shared humanity. It's a journey that requires openness, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Let diverse cultures and landscapes transform you. I encourage you to venture beyond your comfort zone. Engage with local cultures, listen to their stories, and share your own. You'll be in awe over the commonalities that unite us, inspired by the diversity that enriches and reminds us of the uncomplicated joys of life. In an age where borders often divide, travel has the power to unite. It shapes our perspectives and reminds us that, despite our differences, we are all connected.

Explore the world. You may find that it – and you – are more extraordinary than you ever imagined!
